requirements so that they could play their rightful role in the development and improvement of Indian Higher Educational System as well as they could discharge their responsibilities in most meaningful and effective manner for maintaining high standard of Higher Education in India. It was also felt that there is a need to have forum for interaction among the teachers of various disciplines and belonging to various institutions. In view of this and as envisaged in the Programme of Action (POA) (1987) and National Policy on Education (NPE) (1986), the University Grants Commission (UGC) decided to introduce the Academic Staff Orientation Scheme (ASOS) in 1987 with the establishment of 51 Academic Staff Colleges (ASC) within the University system all over the country. While the UGC provided cent percent financial assistance to the Universities for establishing Academic Staff Colleges, the Universities were advised to provide necessary infrastructural facilities to these units.
